Callum Hedge has enjoyed an incredible two weeks of motorsport, on two different continents, in two different types of race car.
Hedge scored podium results in the second round of the Porsche Carrera Cup Australia Championship to solidify his place as a title contender, before jetting to the United States where he clean-swept Round 3 of Formula Regional Americas at Mid-Ohio on the weekend.
His results at Mid-Ohio have extended his title lead, including seven consecutive victories in the ultra-competitive class.
Hedge’s domination in the United States came after over 40 hours in the air, travelling from Darwin, via Auckland, NZ, and Chicago, USA, to reach Ohio.
Qualifying was cancelled on Friday due to inclement weather forcing the grid to be set by championship position ensuring Hedge started the opening race from pole. It was a dominant display by Hedge as he led from start-to-finish to greet the chequered flag 12s ahead of his nearest rival.
Hedge started Race 2 from second after this grid was set by the fastest laps of the opener, but a great jump ensured the New Zealander led into Turn 1.
Sustaining multiple attacks from his rivals, Hedge continued his winning ways by taking a hard fought second victory of the weekend. It was another lights-to-flag performance in Race 3 as Hedge concluded a perfect weekend at Mid-Ohio
“Another almost perfect weekend with three wins. Very happy to be on such a good streak and it’s super cool to be able to have success in championships on different continents within one week.”
Hedge enjoys the challenge of adapting from a tin-top Porsche, to an open wheel machine.
“I do a lot of driving between different cars all the time, and I really think it benefits my race craft. Over the years, I have learned to adapt my driving very quickly. Obviously the 2 cars are very different but for me I tend to carry over the same driving fundamentals between every car I drive and fine tune from there.”
Hedge now leads the 2023 Formula Regional Americas championship by 25 points, with Round 4 being held at New Jersey Motorsport Park on 28th-30th July.
Next up for the Kiwi will be a quick stop in Auckland, before heading to Townsville for Round 3 of the Porsche Carrera Cup championship, where he currently sits third in the championship.
