April 17, 2024 – The 2024 Formula Regional Americas Championship season debuted at NOLA Motorsports Park this past weekend with its fair share of ups and downs. The first two out of three total races were plagued with race incidents and multiple red flags, but race three brought out the kind of racing the fans came to see: an almost fully green flag race and intense battles throughout the field. Crosslink Kiwi Motorsport standout and 2023 Vice-Champion Ryan Shehan came out on top with a win in race three, adding to his pair of top-five finishes earlier in the weekend.
Coming off an extended break from racing, race one and two proved tough for the Austin, Texas native as a third-place qualifying result, and some turmoil on track, dropped him to the fifth position for race one. Race two saw Shehan pass the green flag in fourth and despite the three caution periods amongst six laps, the veteran was set up for a pass for third when the final caution was flagged, and he had to settle for a fourth-place position. It was clear he was back into racing form as he claimed the fastest lap of the race and accompanying pole position for race three.
Determined to get to the top step of the podium, Shehan fought hard to keep his position early on. He then held the lead throughout the entire 17-lap race and went on to score the win with a lights to checkered flag victory. Ryan Shehan’s efforts over the weekend see him third in the championship standings with 15 wheel-to-wheel races remaining.
After race three Shehan went on to explain, “It was a tough race. Of course, I had to win the race that had the most green laps, but I’ll take it. I was just trying to stay consistent throughout the whole race. I think I cooked the tires a little too much on the start, so I got a bit worried, but it seemed like the gap was pretty good. We have a new tire compound this year, so a lot of this weekend was figuring out how to manage the tires well in competition. Happy we were able to get it done in the last race, now we just need to focus on keeping it consistent and racking up those championship points throughout the season.”
Now, Ryan will be doing some California dreaming as joins his Crosslink Kiwi Motorsport team on the West Coast this Friday. First, he will be testing the new Ligier JSF4-22 as part of his Test Driver duties for Ligier and coaching during a local race weekend at Thunderhill Raceway. Then, he will be back in his car for the FR Invitational event joining the huge SpeedTour event at the historic Laguna Seca track March 3-5.
